What's Happening in Grade 6

Hello Everyone

I hope people are taking advantage of this beautiful mild weather we have been having! Spring is in the air! We have an exciting event this Thursday, so we are hoping for beautiful weather. The school will be participating in our annual winter play day. It is tradition at STB that the grade 6 students lead the stations. This year, paying tribute to Canada's 150th, all the stations are canadian games and reflected by each province and territory. Follow twitter to see the pics from the day!

In math, we have wrapped up or focus on 2D geometry and we are now moving on toward Probability.

It is a short unit in which students will investigate outcomes and use these outcomes to make theoretical predictions.
BIG IDEAS (taken from “Big Ideas by Dr. Small”):
  • Real-world situations can be represented using probabilities.
  • Probability can be used to predict outcomes.
  • An experimental probability is based on past events and experiments.
  • A theoretical probability is based on an analysis of what could happen.
STUDENT LEARNING GOALS:
  • I can identify probabilities from real-world scenarios.
  • I can make predictions based on theoretical and/or experimental probabilities.
CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS:
  • Express theoretical probability as a ratio of the number of favourable outcomes to the total number of possible outcomes where all outcomes are equally likely.
  • Represent the probability of an even using a value from the range of 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain)
  • Predict the frequency of an outcome of a simple probability experiment or game by calculating and using the theoretical probability of that outcome.

In Language, specifically in reading, we have begun inferring by reading the book "Iqbal." Students are very engaged with the story as they have heard alot about Iqbal through our WE foundation participation. In writing, we have begun to explore fables. This week students will begin to write their own fables based on the success criteria we have come up with for a fable.

We have been preparing the students for the sacrament of Confirmation all year, but it is at this time that we will begin our in depth focus on the image of God. Over the course of the next few months, students may come home with some tasks to work through with their parents around confirmation. As we prepare your child for this important sacrament, we ask that you participate at home and discuss with your child the special bond they are forming with the church as they prepare for Confirmation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the school.
