HEADER - DO NOT TOUCH

End of Summer...beginning of fall...

We are definitely starting to see the signs of fall- cool mornings and evening, leaves starting to change colours and apple picking season upon us. No only did we usher in fall this week but we also had our Meet the Teacher night this past Tuesday. Thanks for everyone who came out and participated in the student centres. It was great to see familiar faces and new faces.  For those that could not make, I have posted my presentation below.

This week was filled with many exciting activities! Students finished their vision boards. These boards are to serve as reminders for their long and short term goals this year. They are to hang this board somewhere visible at home to be reminded of what they are working towards.

In  Math, students continued to work on number talks. They are becoming really quick at doing mental  math. They had a lot of fun sharing "their parents thinking" this past week. We looked at some strategies you used at home. As reinforcement, you can always give your child a quick equation to practice the strategies they are learning at school.

Next weekend, myself, as well as many staff members from BER will be participating in the CIBC Run for the Cure to raise money for breast cancer.  Big thank you to all who supported us this past Friday by wearing PINK!

This coming week, we will launch our WE School program. WE Schools is a "unique, four-step service-learning program that inspires young people to identify the local and global issues that spark their passion and then empowers them with the skills and tools to take local and global actions (We Schools)."

Another big focus this year is the 17 global goals for sustainability. Here is some information about the goals from the global goals website describing what the 17 goals are and how they came about, their call to action and the picture displays the 17 goals that we will contribute to this year.

As noted on the United Nations Sustainable Website:

On 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development — adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at an historic UN Summit — officially came into force.  Over the next fifteen years, with these new Goals that universally apply to all, countries will mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.
The SDGs build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and aim to go further to end all forms of poverty. The new Goals are unique in that they call for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and addresses a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.
Have a great week
