The Month of May

Can you believe we are already halfway through the month of May?

Where has the time gone??? Things have definitely not slowed down for us in the classroom. We have been very busy working our persuasive letters that address issues related to our survey's we took earlier last month. We are now in the final stages of our final copy. One of the areas we really focused on in our persuasive writing was our plan of action. It was important to think about what action we wanted to take now that our data was collected. The student's topics ranged from school initiatives (ie., school yard) to local initiatives (changing laws in order for restaurants to offer lactose options on their menus).

In math, we have moved our focus to Measurement. Our big ideas range from the following:

  • There is always value in estimating a measurement. The length of an object is a one-dimensional attribute.
  • Length can be the measurement of a single measure of an object or a combined linear measure, like perimeter.

Our specific curriculum expectations that we are focusing on are the following:
  • select and justify the most appropriate standard unit (i.e., millimetre, centimetre, decimetre, metre, kilometre) to measure length, height, width, and distance;
  • solve problems requiring conversion from metres to centimetres and from kilometres to metres (Sample problem: Describe the multiplicative relationship between the number of centimetres and the number of metres that represent a length. Use this relationship to convert 5.1 m to centimetres.);
This past week students had the opportunity to code using WeDo Lego. Check out our pics from the morning. Students were very excited and engaged creating robots and talking alligators using an online coding program called Scratch.

Sorry for the late posting of the May Newsletter.
