Our next math unit!!!

This week we will start a new math unit – angles and shapes! We will be focusing on these geometric concepts for the next couple of weeks.
UNIT: Angles and Shapes
BIG IDEAS (taken from “Big Ideas by Dr. Small”):
  • Some attributes of shapes are quantitative, others are qualitative.
  • Geometric shapes can be classified and sorted according to attributes.
  • The measurement of an angle is defined by how much one arm turns around a vertex relative to the other arm.
STUDENT LEARNING GOALS:
  • I can classify angles and construct them up to 90°
  • I can classify triangles based on both angles and side lengths.
  • I can construct a triangle based on specified criteria.
  • I can classify polygons.
CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS:
  • distinguish among polygons, regular polygons, and other two-dimensional shapes
  • identify and classify acute, right, obtuse, and straight angles;
  • measure and construct angles up to 90º, using a protractor;
  • identify triangles (i.e., acute, right, obtuse, scalene, isosceles, equilateral), and classify them according to angle and side properties;
  • construct triangles, using a variety of tools (e.g., protractor, compass, dynamic geometry software), given acute or right angles and side measurements (Sample problem: Use a protractor, ruler, and pencil to construct a scalene triangle with a 30° angle and a side measuring 12 cm.).
