This week's homework

Week of Feb 1-5, 2016
This week students will be working on pages 42-43 "Constructing Triangles." Reminder- if you do not have a protractor at home, please come and see me. Once you have completed these worksheets, please fill out the survey found here to tell me how are you finding this homework. Please continue with your reading RAZ kids and making connections while you read.

Homework

Week of Jan 25-29, 2016
This week students will be working on pages 38-39 "Measuring and Constructing Angles." If you need a protractor, please come and see me. Once you have completed these worksheets please fill out the survey found here.  Please continue with RAZ kids and making connections while you read.

Over the last few weeks we have been busy working on various tasks. In math we have begun a focus on 2D Geometry. We are specifically looking at identifying different polygons and classifying them according to attributes. We are looking at parallel lines, congruence and symmetry to help identify properties. As an extra task at home students can take pictures of various shapes or cut pictures out of magazines and identify their properties. Try to find shapes that are not so common, pentagons, octagons. We will continue to focus on properties for the next week and then move onto triangles and angles.

In language we have wrapped up our descriptive writing focus and are now focusing on reading and making connections. We are looking beyond making connections from past experiences through text, self and world but rather to extend our connections and connect to an author's message, an event, a problem in the story, a character or a setting in the story. As your child reads at home this week, some questions to ask him or her are:

1) Have you felt like the character in this book?
2) What does this remind you of?
3) Does it remind you of something you have experienced?
4) Is there anything you'd compare this to?
5) Does this make you think of another character/problem/message/setting/event from another story?

2D Geometry Word List Student Created

We have shifted our math focus to 2D Geometry. Take a look at the words students chose to define for our math wall related to geometry. We had some great discussions. What is the difference between 2D and 3D Geometry? Great to review with your child the meaning of the words.

Our next math unit!!!

This week we will start a new math unit – angles and shapes! We will be focusing on these geometric concepts for the next couple of weeks.
UNIT: Angles and Shapes
BIG IDEAS (taken from “Big Ideas by Dr. Small”):
  • Some attributes of shapes are quantitative, others are qualitative.
  • Geometric shapes can be classified and sorted according to attributes.
  • The measurement of an angle is defined by how much one arm turns around a vertex relative to the other arm.
STUDENT LEARNING GOALS:
  • I can classify angles and construct them up to 90°
  • I can classify triangles based on both angles and side lengths.
  • I can construct a triangle based on specified criteria.
  • I can classify polygons.
CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS:
  • distinguish among polygons, regular polygons, and other two-dimensional shapes
  • identify and classify acute, right, obtuse, and straight angles;
  • measure and construct angles up to 90ยบ, using a protractor;
  • identify triangles (i.e., acute, right, obtuse, scalene, isosceles, equilateral), and classify them according to angle and side properties;
  • construct triangles, using a variety of tools (e.g., protractor, compass, dynamic geometry software), given acute or right angles and side measurements (Sample problem: Use a protractor, ruler, and pencil to construct a scalene triangle with a 30° angle and a side measuring 12 cm.).

Welcome 2016

We have started off to a great start of 2016. We had a very busy week finishing up a unit on decimals as well as our descriptive writing pieces.  Assessments will be emailed to students email accounts over the next couple of weeks. Please share your assessment with your mom and dad.
